Nice to know
Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte was one of the highest generals in Napoleon Bonaparte's army. In 1798 he briefly stayed in Vienna as a French envoy. During his stay he met Ludwig van Beethoven. The general was known for his understanding of music and his interest in Beethoven's compositions. Allegedly, he suggested Beethoven should compose a heroic symphony for Napoleon. This suggestion, however, remains doubtful in music research.
After his stay in Vienna Bernadotte returned to Paris. In 1806 Napoleon named him Prince of Pontecorvo. Karl XIII. of Sweden and Norway made him his successor to the Swedish throne in 1818.(S.B.)
