Description of music engraving
The illustrations in Diderot's and d'Alembert's "Encyclopédie" (1767) display in the lower half tools for music engraving. Related to copper engraving, the procedure serves for preparing the printing plates. The upper illustrations refer to the engraving of maps. A second illustration deals with letter engraving.
All illustrations are explained in detail in the related French encyclopaedic entry.
Further illustrations related to the entry show the tools used in music engraving, among them échoppe (fig. 8), hammer (fig. 12), anvil (fig. 13) and a special pair of compasses (fig. 18). The pair of compasses was used to measure the position to be corrected on the front and then transfer it to the back where it was punched back using hammer and anvil. (F.G.)
