Beethoven discusses the further education of his nephew Karl with Peters. Karl had expressed the desire to break off his university studies of philosophy and to enrol at the polytechnic institute instead to pursue a commercial career. Beethoven wants Karl to continue his studies as he considers his poor performance to be merely a result of fear of exams and shyness. He asks Peters for his opinion. Peters should talk to Karl and then decide. Between 1820 and 1825 Karl Peters and Beethoven shared guardianship of the nephew. In April or the beginning of May the latter did actually enrol at the polytechnic institute.
