Nice to know

Original gathering

These two bifolia originally formed the last gathering of the so-called Wielhorsky Sketchbook. They still lie in the order of the original gathering, as occurs when a large sheet of paper is folded. The (oblong) sheet is folded in the middle, first horizontally then vertically. The fold on the upper edge of the sheet is cut, the leaves are then joined on the other fold. The leaves mainly contain sketches for Beethoven's Oratorio "Christus am Ölberge" (Christ on the Mount of Olives) op. 85, but also for some other works. On leaf 4r Beethoven wrote down ideas for the cadenza to his third piano concerto. He played this concerto for the first time in the academy in which the oratorio was also given its first performance. The academy took place on 5 April 1803 in the Theater an der Wien for the composer's benefit. (J.R.)
