Nice to know

Handwritten addition to the printed concerto

As was the case with the autograph cadenza HCB Mh 11, the one shown here for the first movement of the first Piano Concerto op. 15 was also probably written for Beethoven's pupil the Archduke Rudolph, around 1809. The call number "50 Beethoven", written in pencil on the top left of the first page, shows that the manuscript was in the Archduke's music collection. As with HCB Mh 11 the handwritten cadenza was inserted into a reissue of the concerto with a new title page, which was kept in the music library under the number 50. This is the reason why both cadenzas were given the same number. (J.R.)
