Changed ending
In the middle of the front page of the sketch leaf for the incidental music to "Die Ruinen von Athen" ("The Ruins of Athens") op. 113 Beethoven wrote down his intention of having the "Schluß in E dur" ("Ending in E major"). He gave up this idea - the ending of the seventh number sketched here is in G major in the finished work. The reverse of the leaf is almost empty, only the first line contains sketches for the last line of text for the chorus "bey einem Volke mit offenem Sinn". (J.R.)
