Beethoven desperately wants to see Josephine Deym and to have the "long denied talk". He tells her briefly about the performance of the Mass (op. 86) in Eisenstadt, and that he is slowly getting well again so that he no longer has to avoid people's company. He hopes that Josephine will receive him in the next few days.
This letter contains clear signs of the approaching end of the correspondence between Beethoven and Josephine and thus the end of their relationship. Josephine had been distancing herself from the composer for some time. As a reaction to this Beethoven had obviously decided not to get in contact with her ("How often have I battled with myself, dear J, not to ignore the ban which I imposed upon myself."). The request for a talk and the fear that he will not see her personally after repeated unsuccessful attempts, also show Beethoven's worry that he will lose his beloved.
