Many sketches op. 106
No autograph score, corrected copy or engraver's model has survived for Beethoven's "Großer Sonate für das Hammerklavier" op. 106. However a great many sketches still exist. The leaf shown here contains pencil and ink sketches for the fourth movement of this piano sonata. Beethoven began making sketches for op. 106 in November/December 1817, presumably beginning with the first movement. The composer worked on the fourth movement in the summer of 1818, so the leaf shown here would be from this time. (J.R.)
