From Latin metallum (metal). Also called votive medal or medallion. Coin-like souvenir made from metal with no legal value. Medals are manufactured in memory of people or events or as awards for outstanding achievement. They are either round or oval (square formats are called badges). Whereas the front side (obverse) usually features a portrait or scenes of the acclaimed event, the back side (reverse) pictures allegorical, symbolic or mythological depictions often accompanied by inscriptions.
