Oratorio

Musical genre; a composition for soloists, choir and orchestra, generally with a specially written text. It has a sacred theme, but is not included in the liturgy. More extensive than the cantata, it is also not intended to be staged and does not depict a continuous story. Beethoven only wrote one oratorio, "Christ on the Mount of Olives", op. 85.
