From Greek allegorein (say with other words). Emblematic depiction of abstract terms and ideas. Often this is done by transferring the term onto a human character (personification) of which the meaning is imparted through special characteristics, facial expressions, clothing or an explanatory description. Besides human characters, animals are also used for allegorical depictions. For more complex meanings, the personification is set up in a larger, often complex context of actions. See also symbol.
