Red chalk

A red ochre of natural origin containing alumina and coloured with iron oxide, which can be used in powder form as a colourant. Red chalk is usually used as drawing chalk. For this, burnt light ochre and Terra di Siena are mixed, the powder is burnt and then pressed into pencils. Depending on the burning time, light, dark and violet-red colour gradations can be produced. The red chalk pencil is softer than chalk and can be applied to paper in different densities (e.g. by moistening the pencil).
