Screen Concerts

Great cinema for eyes and ears

In cooperation with the Förderverein Filmkultur Bonn e.V., we present music at the interface of visual arts and film in our series of screen concerts. Screen concerts come in many varieties: from so-called music films to performances of film music and live music to image and film projections. Just as paintings became music and Beethoven's music influenced film-makers, the Beethoven-Haus is now continuing the series in the international sound/art/cinema format with its 4.8 x 3.6 metre screen.

In co-operation with the Förderverein Filmkultur Bonn e.V.

  • Aljoscha Zimmermann Ensemble
  • Sabrina Zimmermann, violine
  • Mark Pogolski, piano

The wild snowy landscapes that Ernst Lubitsch creates on the screen are the realm of the expressive robber's daughter in the form of the famous Pola Negri, and contrast with the ornate interiors that are home to the officer with whom she falls in love. The film's special charm lies in this alternation between tricky exterior shots and chamber-like interiors. As a grotesque, the film pokes fun at everything military.

  • Richard Siedhoff, piano
  • Mykyta Sierov, oboe

The two musicians Richard Siedhoff and Mykyta Sierov elicit the wildest sounds, noises and melodies from their instruments and, in a playful exchange with the (young) audience, make it possible to experience how live music and silent film interact. The almost 100-year-old films captivate with timeless humour: slapstick stars Anita Garvey and Marion Bryon try to buy a delicious ice cream in A PAIR OF TIGHTS, ALICE'S DAY AT SEA features a real girl and a dog as well as the first drawn and animated elements, and Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are very musical in YOU'RE DARN TOOTIN'.
