Paul Hindemith and Ludwig van Beethoven

How the Worlds of Two Composers are Linked

20.06.2009 to 30.08.2009

Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) and Ludwig van Beethoven are two composers that you might not immediately associate with each other. The exhibition aims to show the links between the two.

Various manuscripts of Hindemith's music, which can be seen in Bonn thanks to the close cooperation with the Hindemith Institute in Frankfurt am Main, prove that he followed in Beethoven's footsteps several times when composing. Both composers share a common link in their admiration for Bach. Of course, Beethoven's works also played a significant role in Hindemith's repertoire as a performing musician, which is documented in the exhibition. Hindemith opened the Beethovenhalle in Bonn in 1959 with Beethoven's ballet music "The Creatures of Prometheus" op. 43 and his own orchestral suite "Nobilissima Visione". Hindemith had already performed several times at the Beethoven-Haus chamber music festivals in Bonn.

The developments of the Beethoven-Haus over the last 11 years are at the centre of the second part of the exhibition. Prof Dr Andreas Eckhardt, who is also President of the Hindemith Foundation, has been director of the Beethoven-Haus since 1998; this exhibition marks his retirement.
