Beethoven and Church Music
05.03.2016 to 28.08.2016
Beethoven's first job was as a court organist at the Bonn court of the Elector and Archbishop of Cologne. He had previously worked as an organist at the Minorite Church. Against this background, it is astonishing that Beethoven no longer composed church music. His Mass in C major, Op. 86, composed in 1807, and his Missa solemnis, Op. 123, composed between 1819 and 1823, seem like solitaires. In the course of his years in Vienna, Beethoven kept thinking about other church music works, but ultimately did not pursue them any further. The special exhibition refers to these two main works as well as to little known ones.
