Beethoven's Piano Sonatas
02.07.2012 to 09.12.2012
On the occasion of the master class that András Schiff will be giving from 2 to 8 July in the Chamber Music Hall H.J. Abs of the Beethoven-Haus, a special exhibition will be on display that provides insights into the original manuscripts of Beethoven's piano sonatas. Beethoven's manuscripts speak to the viewer, as it were: they contain a multitude of often meticulous notes that indicate the composer's idea of a work. Beethoven wrote down more instructions for the performer than his contemporaries. Nevertheless, there is still a great deal of room for manoeuvre, which the interpreter should use with stylistic confidence. The exhibition therefore also provides an insight into Beethoven's own way of playing the piano, into the keyboard instruments and piano schools in use at the time and into the history of interpretation, as can be seen from instructive editions by famous Beethoven interpreters, among other things.
On display are such important sources as the autograph of the "Waldstein Sonata", the last sonata in C minor op. 111 and other artefacts from the Beethoven-Haus's particularly rich collection of piano sonatas.
