A Picture and Its History
August von Kloeber's Portrait of Beethoven
22.11.2007 to 25.05.2008
In the summer of 1818, the young painter August von Kloeber visited Ludwig van Beethoven in Mödling. On this occasion, he created a portrait which, like few other portraits of the composer, shaped the image that posterity had and still has of Beethoven's appearance. The new exhibition in the Beethoven House uses original documents and drawings by Kloeber to demonstrate the creation of this picture and its variants. In addition, it presents a selection from the large group of pictures and objects that further utilise Kloeber's Beethoven image - whether to create a new romantic portrait of the composer or to decorate everyday objects. The spectrum of exhibits ranges from Romantic paintings to Beethoven clocks and shows the reception of this portrait from the early 19th century to the present day in a sometimes quite amusing way.
