Beethoven and Kant

Genius - Republic - Freedom

8 September 2024 to 6 January 2025

The themes of 'genius, republic, freedom' were central to both Immanuel Kant and Beethoven. Beethoven's enthusiasm for Kant is well documented; throughout his life, from his youth in Bonn onwards, Beethoven studied Kant's writings. Traces of Kant's ideas can be found in many places in Beethoven's works, but also directly and indirectly in his letters and other written documents. The exhibition, which has been organised in cooperation with the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Bonn to mark the 300th anniversary of Kant's birth and the 14th International Kant Congress in Bonn in September, uses selected exhibits on the above-mentioned topics to illustrate the parallelism of Enlightenment ideas in Kant's and Beethoven's work.
