Lewis Lockwood appointed an honorary member of the Beethoven-Haus Association

The certificate of honorary membership of the Beethoven-Haus Association was presented to the internationally renowned American musicologist Lewis Lockwood on Monday by Michael Kranz, Chairman of the Association's Board, and Director Malte Boecker. The members of the Beethoven-Haus Association had unanimously elected Lockwood as an honorary member at their meeting in July.

'By appointing the widely respected and distinguished Beethoven scholar Lewis Lockwood, we wish to send a clear signal of recognition to a scholar with whom the Beethoven-Haus has been collaborating for almost half a century in the most important fields of Beethoven biography and philology,' explained Malte Boecker.

Lewis Lockwood (born 1930) is one of the world's leading Beethoven scholars of recent decades. Many of his numerous publications on Beethoven's life, works and creative process have long been regarded as standard reference works. Among his most recent major publications, a comprehensive compendium on the symphonies, a biography (which has also been translated into German) and an edition of his sketchbooks are particularly noteworthy. Lewis Lockwood also held professorships at the prestigious universities of Princeton and Harvard. As President of the American Musicological Society, he represented a major American institution. Lewis Lockwood received high honours for his scholarly achievements. Among other distinctions, he was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Philosophical Society.

Lockwood's ties to the Beethoven-Haus date back to the 1960s. Since then, he has frequently visited Bonn to conduct research, engage in dialogue with colleagues at the Beethoven Archive, or attend conferences. As a result of this fruitful collaboration, the Beethoven-Haus's in-house publishing house released a facsimile edition of Beethoven's Cello Sonata in A major, Op. 69, in 2015, with Lockwood serving as co-editor.
