A garden like Beethoven's music
The Beethoven-Haus has launched a crowdfunding project to redesign Beethoven's garden. Donations are being collected on the Sparkasse KölnBonn's 'Hier mit Herz' portal
21.04.2026The garden of the Beethoven-Haus offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city centre and is cherished by visitors as an oasis of calm. Now, the green space, which borders directly on Beethoven’s birthplace and the chamber music hall, is to be redesigned to be more natural in character and will also be used occasionally for cultural events. A design for the redesign by Garten- und Landschaftsbau Forster is already available.
To finance the project, estimated at around 20,000 euros, which cannot be covered by the institution’s budget, the Beethoven-Haus is now asking all Beethoven enthusiasts, nature lovers and fans of Bonn for their support. Under the slogan 'A garden like Beethoven’s music', a crowdfunding campaign has been launched, in which people can participate even with small donations. On the 'Hier mit Herz' website, the donation portal of Sparkasse KölnBonn, donations for the project will be collected until 30 September 2026 and forwarded to the Beethoven-Haus Foundation.
Until now, the garden's planting scheme has been very understated. There are virtually no flowering plants that also provide food for insects. 'We envisage that in future it will be a garden that has the same effect as Beethoven's music,' explains museum director Nicole Kämpken. 'Beethoven's Garden, as we call it, serves so many important functions: not only does it provide a counterpoint to the hustle and bustle of the city centre, it also aids evaporation, helps regulate temperature and improves the microclimate. And it is intended to invite people to pause and reflect, offering them inspiration and a chance to slow down – just like Beethoven's music.'
Cheerful and life-affirming, with plant arrangements that reveal themselves on different levels and appear at times powerful, at times delicately nuanced – this is what Beethoven's Garden is set to look like in future. Coordinated flowering times are intended to create a rhythm throughout the year. The plan is for a planting scheme that is climate-resilient, ecologically valuable and insect-friendly.
