The Beethoven-Haus mourns the loss of Alfred Brendel

Alfred Brendel (born on 5 January 1931, died on 17 June 2025) was an honorary member of the Beethoven-Haus for four decades. His Beethoven interpretations have set standards, inspired and motivated. Through a benefit concert in Berlin in 2008, he supported our acquisition of the original manuscript of Beethoven's ‘Diabelli Variations' op. 120, which he saw as an 'unrivalled humorous cosmos'. With his International Masterclass for Chamber Music, which he organised in 2010, he made a special commitment to young artists at the Beethoven-Haus.

We will be left with formative memories of this extraordinary artist and person and with great gratitude.
