BTHVN2027
The 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death
12.06.2026'Oh, how wonderful it is to live life a thousand times –'
Good Friday this coming season coincides with the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death. Following the 250th anniversary of his birth in 2020 and the 200th anniversary of the premiere of Symphony No. 9 and the Missa Solemnis in 2024, this is the third – and, for the time being, the last – Beethoven anniversary. We have done everything we can to ensure that this will be a colourful and vibrant season, looking ahead to the enduring relevance and fascination of Beethoven right up to the present day and into the future. Under the motto BTHVN2027, a wide range of exemplary, innovative and inspiring projects awaits you, designed to encourage you to engage deeply with Beethoven.
The highlight of this season will be a spectacular special exhibition entitled ‘Beethoven by Warhol’, under the patronage of the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Just before his unexpected death in 1987, Warhol created the iconic portraits that have shaped the 20th-century image of Beethoven in a unique way. With hundreds of objects, some of which have never been shown in public before, we will explore how this series of prints came about and how closely it is linked to our museum’s collection. We are also delighted to welcome the multi-talented pianist, chamber musician and conductor Anna Handler as Artist in Residence. Ever since her appointment as Conductor in Residence of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, she has been regarded as one of the most promising musicians of her generation. She will be appearing at the Beethoven-Haus on several occasions. Furthermore, President Daniel Hope, various honorary members such as Sir András Schiff, Evgenj Koroliov and Andreas Staier, and musicians with whom we have close ties are planning magnificent concert specials that will come together to form a unique season. Other highlights are set to include a replica of Beethoven's last grand piano, as well as our involvement in the national 'Jugend Musiziert' competition – taking place in Bonn for the first time – and the world premiere of 'Leonore 1805' by the Beethoven Orchestra at the 2027 Beethovenfest, based on a new edition of the score published by us.
