Beethoven Perspectives (2019-2021)
International conference 10–14 February 2020
On the occasion of Beethoven’s anniversary in 2020, the Beethoven-Archiv has been hosting an international conference on "Beethoven Perspectives" in order to bring together leading international scholars in the field of Beethoven research as well as promising young researchers. The aim of the conference was not only to give an overall picture of current Beethoven research, but also to develop new perspectives, to discuss well-known or new desiderata, and last but not least to present Beethoven as a lively (and constantly changing) topic of research. Five main symposia, each of them conceived by two chair persons, addressed the issues Political Beethoven, A global Beethoven? and Beethoven in Bonn as well as Creative Beethoven, and Beethoven's reception of other composers. In a roundtable organized by the Academy Project "Beethovens Werkstatt", entitled "Sketches as Workshop Documents: Creative Processes in Comparison", the composer Beethoven was compared with Haydn, Mozart and Schumann. Furthermore, free papers were being presented in sixteen sessions on topics such as biographical, philosophical and ideological aspects of Beethoven, sources research, analysis and aesthetics, specific works as well as genres, and Beethoven reception in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
In addition to the academic papers four evening events were being staged in cooperation with Deutschlandfunk (Cologne).
The conference proceedings will be published by Verlag des Beethoven-Hauses Bonn.
