The remains of an engraver's model

This engraver's model for the Fifth Symphony is not one of the many autograph scores and copies with entries by Beethoven owned by the Beethoven-Haus. It belonged to the Leipzig publishers Breitkopf & Härtel, who published the first edition of the symphony in 1808, and was kept in the publishers' archives until the Second World War. In the 1930s photographs were made of the corrected copy of the score for the Beethoven-Haus to help scholars. They were only made of the 116 pages containing entries and corrections in Beethoven's handwriting (including the title page). The source, originally comprising 182 pages, was lost in 1943 during the war. These photographs are therefore the only remaining proof of the copy which Beethoven had made for the publishers, corrected himself and then allowed to be printed. (J.R.)
